Include the full names of the parties, the approximate filing date, and any case number you have. Send payment by money order or certified check — personal checks are not accepted for mail requests.

    Are Court Records Public in Vance County?

    North Carolina's Public Records Act (N.C. Gen. Stat. Chapter 132) sets a broad default of public access to documents made or received by any state agency or subdivision. Most court records — criminal dockets, civil case filings, judgments, probate documents — are open for inspection and copying under this framework.

    That said, several categories are either restricted or sealed entirely:

    • Juvenile court records — Protected under N.C. Gen. Stat. 7B-3000; delinquency and abuse/neglect proceedings are confidential to protect minors.
    • Adoption records — Sealed by statute; a court order is required to access them.
    • Mental health and involuntary commitment records — Confidential under applicable mental health statutes.
    • Mediation records — Shielded from disclosure under N.C. Gen. Stat. 7A-38.1 to encourage candid settlement negotiations.
    • Expunged criminal records — Once expunged by court order, the record is removed from public access.
    • Records sealed by court order — Any record a judge has specifically ordered sealed is not available to the general public.
    • Active criminal investigation records and attorney-client communications — Exempt under law enforcement and privilege protections.

    Under North Carolina law, individuals may also request the removal of certain personal identifying information from court records where permitted.

    Vance County Criminal Court Records

    Criminal cases in Vance County are divided between two court levels based on the severity of the offense.

    Searching Criminal Records

    You can search criminal case information for free at the courthouse's public access terminals or through the NC Judicial Branch Portal online. Both tools allow searches by defendant name or case number. For a certified county-level criminal background check, submit Form AOC-CR-314 to the Clerk of Superior Court along with a $25.00 fee. Mail payments must be by money order or certified check; in-person payments can be made by cash, credit card, money order, or certified check. Keep in mind that this covers only Vance County court records — it is not a statewide search.

    Statewide Criminal History

    If you need a statewide fingerprint-based criminal history, the NC State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) handles a Right to Review process for individuals seeking their own record. The SBI charges $14.00 for this search, payable by mail with a completed fingerprint card and request form. Businesses and employers with specific statutory authority may access SBI criminal history records under separate authorization.

    Vance County Family Court Records

    Family law matters — divorce, equitable distribution, child custody, child support, domestic violence protective orders, and juvenile delinquency and dependency cases — are all heard in the District Court. The District Court operates at the same Church Street courthouse address as the Superior Court.

    Divorce Records

    Divorce decrees and related case filings are civil records maintained by the Clerk of Superior Court. Requests for copies follow the same in-person or mail procedures as other civil records. If you need a divorce certificate from 1958 to the present, North Carolina Vital Records offers another path. The state charges a $24.00 nonrefundable search fee per three-year period searched, which includes one copy of the certificate if a record is found.     Marriage Records

    Marriage licenses are issued by, and marriage certificates recorded with, the Vance County Register of Deeds. Online requests submitted after 4:00 PM are processed the next business day. Records go back to 1913.

    Certified copies of marriage certificates from the Register of Deeds cost $10.00 per copy, with a $4.00 online service fee and a $1.00 identity authentication fee for web-based requests. Wait at least 10 days after the marriage before requesting a certified copy. You can also order online through the Vance County Register of Deeds Vital Records portal.

    Birth and Death Records

    Birth and death certificates for events in Vance County are kept by the Register of Deeds and are also available through the North Carolina Vital Records state office. Certified copies from the Register of Deeds cost $10.00 each. Access is restricted — only the named individual (if of legal age), immediate family members, legal representatives, authorized agents, and certain government and law enforcement agencies may obtain certified copies. The Granville Vance Public Health department also offers local guidance on vital records for residents of both counties.

    Vance County Probate Court Records

    In North Carolina, the Clerk of Superior Court holds all probate authority at the county level. Under N.C. Gen. Stat. 7A-241, the Clerk has exclusive original jurisdiction over the probate of wills and the administration of decedents' estates.
