Iredell County sits in the western Piedmont region of North Carolina, with its county seat in Statesville. The county’s judicial system operates under Superior Court District 32 and District Court District 32, both headquartered at the Iredell County Hall of Justice. Unlike jurisdictions that maintain separate specialized courts, Iredell County’s superior and district courts together handle the full range of criminal, civil, family, and probate matters. The Clerk of Superior Court serves as the primary custodian of court records and is the starting point for anyone seeking to inspect, search, or obtain copies of case files.

Court records in Iredell County can be located through a combination of official resources. The North Carolina Judicial Branch operates an eCourts Portal that allows anyone to search case information, court dates, and filings across all North Carolina counties online. In addition to this statewide tool, NorthCarolinaCourts.us may assist users in finding court-related information. Locally, the Clerk of Superior Court’s office at the Iredell County Hall of Justice provides public access computer terminals for searching case records, and staff can assist with pulling paper files for in-person inspection. The county also offers a general public records request portal for submitting record requests online, though an account is required.

Are Court Records Public in Iredell County?

North Carolina has a strong public records law. Under Chapter 132, Section 1 of the North Carolina General Statutes, public records include all documents made or received by government agencies in connection with public business. Court records in Iredell County fall within this definition and are generally available for public inspection unless a specific law or court order restricts access.

Requesters can access most court records at no charge through public terminals at the courthouse. Fees apply when copies are requested or when a certified search is conducted. The statute provides that any fees charged must be limited to the actual cost of retrieval and reproduction.

The following categories of court records are typically restricted from public access under North Carolina law:

  • Sealed records — Files sealed by court order, which may include certain plea agreements, informant information, or records sealed for safety reasons
  • Juvenile records — Proceedings involving minors are confidential under North Carolina General Statutes Chapter 7B
  • Records of defendants found not guilty — Certain criminal case records where charges were dismissed or the defendant was acquitted may be expunged or restricted
  • Mental health proceedings — Involuntary commitment and related proceedings are confidential
  • Privileged communications — Attorney-client communications and other privileged materials within case files
  • Security-related information — Court administrative records relating to building security or judicial safety

Confidential court proceedings, such as juvenile and involuntary commitment cases, require a court order to obtain transcripts or audio recordings. The appropriate form for requesting a transcript from a confidential proceeding is Form AOC-G-115. For non-confidential proceedings, Form AOC-G-114 is used.

Persons seeking records that may be restricted should contact the Clerk of Superior Court at (704) 832-6600 to confirm availability and access procedures.
