Greene County, North Carolina, sits in the eastern part of the state with Snow Hill as the county seat. The county's judicial system processes criminal prosecutions, civil disputes, family law matters, and probate proceedings across a Superior Court and a District Court, both housed at the Greene County Courthouse. Records generated through these proceedings — dockets, orders, judgments, motions, and evidence — are part of the state's public record framework, though certain categories carry confidentiality protections.

Researchers looking for Greene County case information can consult NorthCarolinaCourts.us for orientation to North Carolina's court structure. Court records can be searched through the North Carolina Judicial Branch's online Portal, self-service terminals at the clerk's office, and in-person review of case files at the courthouse. The sections below detail each court, the records they maintain, how to request copies, and which types of records are restricted.

How to Look Up a Court Case in Greene County?

There are three practical routes for locating court case information in Greene County:

1. NC Courts Portal (online)
Greene County went live on the North Carolina eCourts system on April 28, 2025, as part of Track 8 of the statewide rollout. Through the NC Courts Portal, anyone can search case records by party name, citation number, case number, or attorney. The portal also shows upcoming court dates and, for eligible cases, allows online payment of fees and fines.

2. Self-service terminals at the Clerk's Office
Public self-service terminals are available inside the Greene County Clerk of Court's office. These terminals provide access to both criminal and civil case data from all 100 North Carolina counties. There's no fee to search at a terminal, but document copies carry a per-page charge.

3. In-person file review
Physical case files can be inspected at the Clerk's office during regular business hours. Staff can pull specific documents and provide copies upon request. Bring the party name, approximate filing date, or case number to speed up the search.

Are Court Records Public in Greene County?

North Carolina's Public Records Law (G.S. Chapter 132) establishes a general presumption that government records — including court records — are public and open to inspection or copying by any person. G.S. Chapter 132 explicitly designates certain court records as public while also specifying that access may be withheld when a record is sealed by court order.

That presumption of openness has important exceptions. The following types of records are considered nonpublic or confidential under North Carolina law or court rules:

  • Juvenile delinquency records — sealed and not accessible to the general public
  • Adoption records — confidential under state law
  • Guardianship and incompetency proceedings — access restricted
  • Presentence investigation reports — not subject to public disclosure
  • Attorney-client correspondence within court files
  • Involuntary hospitalization (mental health) records — confidential; audio recordings require a court order to access using Form AOC-G-115

For non-confidential proceedings, audio recordings made by the clerk or a digital recording technician may be requested using Form AOC-G-114. The requester is charged the actual cost of producing the CD.

Individuals who want a criminal charge or conviction removed from their record may be eligible for an expunction, which seals or destroys the state's records of the matter. Expunction petitions are filed with the clerk in the county where the arrest or charge occurred.

Greene County Criminal Court Records

Criminal jurisdiction in Greene County is split between two court levels:

  • Superior Court — handles felony criminal cases, which are prosecuted by the District Attorney's office for Prosecutorial District 9. The Superior Court also hears appeals from District Court criminal convictions.
  • District Court — handles misdemeanor cases and lower-level criminal offenses. District Court criminal proceedings are generally not recorded unless ordered by a judge; appeals from District Court go to Superior Court for a new trial.

Criminal case records maintained by the Clerk include charging papers (indictments, criminal summonses, warrants), appearance bonds, plea agreements, verdicts, sentencing orders, and any conditions of probation or supervised release. Records for cases tried in both courts are held by the Clerk of Superior Court.

To search criminal case information online, use the NC Courts Portal. The North Carolina Administrative Office of the Courts also operates the Remote Public Access Program (RPA), which gives licensed entities real-time online access or bulk data extracts covering all 100 counties, authorized under G.S. 7A-109(d) and G.S. 7A-343.2.

For arrest information, the primary contact is the Greene County Sheriff's Office, which handles law enforcement, detention, and concealed carry permits. The Sheriff's Office maintains arrest records separately from the court case files held by the Clerk.

Greene County Civil Court Records

Civil cases in Greene County are handled at both the Superior Court and District Court levels, depending on the nature and scale of the claim. The Clerk of Superior Court maintains all civil filings.

Court-level civil jurisdiction at a glance:

  • Superior Court — civil matters typically involving larger dollar amounts, title to land, and cases requiring jury trials
  • District Court — civil matters including summary ejectment, domestic violence protective orders, and smaller monetary claims
  • Small claims (magistrate) — monetary disputes up to $10,000 under N.C.G.S. § 7A-210; confirm the exact local limit by contacting the Clerk's office

Civil case files include complaints and petitions, summonses, answers, motions, discovery materials, expert reports, injunctions, and final judgments. You can review these materials at the Clerk's office and search them through the NC Courts Portal or a self-service terminal at the courthouse.

For property-related records — including deeds, deeds of trust, mortgages, liens, leases, and UCC filings — the Greene County Register of Deeds is the custodian. An online index search is available for records filed since 1875. A tax form signed by the Greene County Tax Office must accompany any deed presented for recording, which requires the Deed Information Form available on the Register's website. The Register of Deeds also accepts e-recording for most document types, excluding maps and highway right-of-ways.

Greene County Family Court Records

The Clerk of Superior Court maintains all family court filings, and basic case information is searchable through the NC Courts Portal.

Divorce records are generally public in North Carolina, though sensitive portions of a case file involving minor children or protected persons may carry access restrictions. To get copies of a divorce judgment or decree, contact the Clerk's office at the Greene County Courthouse and bring the party names and approximate case filing year. Document copies are available for a fee.

Marriage licenses are issued by the Greene County Register of Deeds, not the Clerk of Court. Applicants must appear in person and bring the following:

  • Certified birth certificate for each applicant
  • State-issued photo ID or driver's license (passport required for non-U.S. residents)
  • Social Security card
  • Copy of divorce decree or deceased spouse's death certificate (if previously married)

The fee for a marriage license is $60.00 (cash only). Licenses are issued between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Regardless of where the ceremony takes place, the license must be returned to the Greene County Register of Deeds for recording, since it was issued there. A Marriage License Worksheet is available on the Register's website to help applicants prepare.

Certified copies of marriage certificates are available from the Register of Deeds for $10.00 per copy. Only eligible parties — including the spouses, their parents, siblings, and children — may obtain certified copies under G.S. § 130A-93. Requests can be submitted in person (cash only) or by mail using the Application for a Copy of Birth, Death or Marriage Certificate. Mail-in requests require a money order (no personal checks), a copy of a state-issued photo ID, and a self-addressed, postage-paid return envelope sent to Greene County Register of Deeds, P.O. Box 86, Snow Hill, NC 28580.

Birth and death certificates are also maintained by the Register of Deeds under the same G.S. § 130A-93 access restrictions. Both are restricted to authorized parties, and each certified copy costs $10.00. The same application form and submission procedure described above applies for birth and death records. For statewide vital records — birth certificates from 1913 onward, death certificates from 1930, and marriage certificates from 1962 — records can also be requested through North Carolina Vital Records.

Greene County Probate Court Records

Unlike most states, North Carolina vests probate jurisdiction directly in the Clerk of Superior Court, who serves as judge of probate. The Clerk has exclusive original jurisdiction over the probate of wills, the administration of decedents' estates, the appointment and oversight of personal representatives, the auditing of estate accountings, and the removal of representatives for cause. The Clerk also handles related special proceedings including incompetency determinations, foreclosures, and condemnation matters.

Probate case records held by the Clerk include:

  • Original wills and codicils offered for probate
  • Applications for letters testamentary or letters of administration
  • Inventories and appraisements of estate assets
  • Annual and final accountings submitted by personal representatives
  • Orders, decrees, and judgments entered by the Clerk
  • Guardianship and conservatorship filings

Most probate records are generally public, but proceedings involving guardianship over minors or incompetent persons may have restricted portions. To access probate case information online, use the NC Courts Portal, which became available for Greene County following the eCourts go-live in April 2025. For complete file access or certified copies of probate documents, visit the Clerk of Court in person or submit a written request to the courthouse.

Greene Street, Snow Hill, NC 28580, Phone: (252) 747-6200, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. If you're unsure whether a particular case type falls under probate jurisdiction, the North Carolina Judicial Branch's court records help topic covers estates, wills, and special proceedings and may save you a trip to the courthouse.
