How Do I Look Up Warrants in North Carolina?
NorthCarolinaCourts.us is not a consumer reporting agency as defined by the FCRA and does not provide consumer reports. All searches conducted on NorthCarolinaCourts.us are subject to the Terms of Service and Privacy Notice.
You can use NorthCarolinaCourts.us to locate a warrant in North Carolina, as it compiles publicly available information reported by North Carolina's courts and law enforcement agencies into a single search. When available, a search reveals the warrant type, issuing court, case number, alleged offense, and bail or bond amount, among other details depending on the record type and issuing county.
North Carolina has 100 counties, each with its own clerk of superior court, and the state's judiciary includes district and superior courts operating within 46 prosecutorial districts. The NC Judicial Branch has been rolling out its eCourts Portal on a county-by-county basis — an Odyssey-powered platform that allows online searches for case information, hearing dates, and payments. But the rollout is incremental, and counties not yet converted to eCourts still rely on legacy systems with limited or no public online access. Even where Portal is live, it functions as a case docket tool, not a warrant index. There is no statewide public database dedicated to active warrants.
Searching 100 separate county jurisdictions individually — some online, some not — is a significant undertaking for anyone trying to confirm whether an outstanding warrant exists. A consolidated resource that aggregates available records across the state removes that burden.
Are Warrants Public Information in North Carolina?
North Carolina law draws a sharp and unusual line on warrant records. G.S. § 132-1.4(a) declares that records of criminal investigations conducted by public law enforcement agencies are not public records. But subsection (k) of that same statute creates a specific carve-out: arrest warrants and search warrants that have been returned by law enforcement agencies, along with indictments, criminal summons, and nontestimonial identification orders, are expressly classified as public records that may be withheld only when sealed by court order. The distinction turns on whether the warrant has been executed and returned to the court — once it has, public access attaches.
Bench warrants in North Carolina are called orders for arrest, governed by G.S. § 15A-305. They are issued when a defendant fails to appear after a criminal summons or after a grand jury returns a true bill of indictment, and they become part of the case docket upon issuance. As docket entries, they are accessible at the clerk's office and, in eCourts counties, through the online Portal.
Search warrants and their underlying affidavits remain confidential while an investigation is active, because the broader criminal investigation exemption under § 132-1.4(a) shields them. Only upon return does the warrant itself become a public document. Supporting affidavits may still be withheld if disclosure would compromise an investigation or endanger a witness.
One aspect of North Carolina's public records law stands apart from most states: G.S. § 132-6 requires custodians to respond to inspection requests "as promptly as possible," but sets no fixed deadline — no five-day or fifteen-day clock. Courts have held that what qualifies as reasonable depends on the volume of records requested, the complexity of the issues, and the time needed to locate the material. The absence of a hard deadline means response times vary significantly by agency and county.
How to Search for a Warrant in North Carolina
- Use NorthCarolinaCourts.us. Our Instant Warrant Lookup presents you with warrant record data compiled from available public resources in one convenient search. When available, you can find warrant type, issuing court, case number, alleged offense, and bail/bond amount, among other details, depending on the record type and issuing county.
- Search the NC eCourts Portal. The Judicial Branch's Portal allows public searches for case information by name, case number, citation, or attorney in counties where eCourts is live. Coverage is expanding but not yet statewide. In non-eCourts counties, the older Remote Public Access Program provides criminal and civil court data to approved users. Neither system has a dedicated warrant search function — a user must locate the case and review the docket for warrant-related entries.
- Contact the county sheriff's office or clerk of superior court. Have the individual's full legal name, date of birth, and the county where the case may have originated. Sheriffs' offices enter active warrants into the Division of Criminal Information (DCI) network, but DCI is restricted to law enforcement. A phone inquiry to the sheriff's office or the clerk of court is the most direct public method for confirming an active warrant.
- Visit in person. Court records at the clerk of superior court's office are open for public inspection during business hours. In-person access is available in every county regardless of eCourts status. Be aware that appearing at a courthouse or law enforcement office to inquire about a warrant in your own name carries the risk of immediate arrest if an active warrant is found.
- Retain an attorney. An attorney can make discreet inquiries on a client's behalf through the court system and law enforcement channels without exposing the individual to the risk of arrest during the inquiry.
How Long Is a Warrant Active in North Carolina?
Arrest warrants and orders for arrest do not expire in North Carolina. They remain active until the defendant is taken into custody, the court recalls the warrant, or the underlying charges are dismissed. Search warrants are subject to one of the shortest execution windows in the country: G.S. § 15A-248 requires execution within 48 hours of issuance. A search warrant not served within that window is automatically void, must be marked "not executed," and must be returned to the clerk of the issuing court without unnecessary delay.
North Carolina Warrant Records by County
Warrants in North Carolina are issued and maintained at the county level through the district and superior court system. Each of the state's 100 counties has a clerk of superior court who maintains case files, and a county sheriff responsible for executing warrants and entering them into the DCI network. There is no centralized public warrant database. The DCI system — operated by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation — connects law enforcement agencies statewide but is not accessible to the general public.
